diy modern playhouse

Our daughter turned 3 in the spring and we decided she needed her own playhouse.  I started out scouring craigslist looking for a used playhouse at a fair price but the cheap ones were gone before I got to them or people were asking way too much for a used playhouse.  We decided to build our own.  We thought it would be cheaper to build from scratch rather than buy a pre-fab kit, we were wrong.  The upside was I got to design it and our daughter ended up with unique playhouse just for her!  It is made out of cedar except for the four corner posts that are pressure treated. After adding the cedar shakes to the exterior we installed thin plywood to the interior walls to hide all the nails protruding through.  The roof is made out of corrugated metal.

Of course every playhouse should have its own mailbox.
View from the kitchen sink.
Sunshine curtain made out of outdoor fabric....hopefully it won't mold.
Curtain rod made out of plumbing materials.
A very full sandbox thanks to the extra sand Lauren dumped on my front yard when I wasn't home.
Munchkins playing in the sandbox.  I still need to make a sandbox cover to prevent neighbourhood cats from doing their business in the sandbox....so gross.

  2. That looks like a great space. I'm gearing up to build something very similar for my kiddos. Any chance you could share the dimensions?

    1. Thanks, it is amazing how much use it gets! Although we didn't build it that long ago I can't remember the dimensions. I will measure it tomorrow and let you know.

    2. The base of the entire structure (including deck) is 92" x 67". The deck is 36" by the entire width of the structure. The floor is approximatley 53" above the ground. The door into the playhouse is 24" x 50". Let me know if there are any other measurements you would like.

    3. These dimensions are a great start, I don't suppose you have the plans as well? Even if they were just rough plans, the more help we have the better. :-)

    4. What size slide did you get? We just built our treehouse about the same height.

  3. I love this house! Very creative! Where did you get the slide?

  4. Thanks. We got the slide off of craigslist. The slide ended up being a bit short for the height of the platform on the playhouse so we raised the bottom end as much as we could but it is still a fast slide...which the kids seem to enjoy! Most big box renovation stores usually sell the slides individually too.

  10. Curious if the base has held up well to weather? Is the wood resting right on the dirt? Any gravel below or similar for drainage? Thanks - great inspiration...

  15. Hi. I am loving this playhouse and it is very similar to what my husband and I plan to build. I wonder if you would be willing to share your plans? Also, you mentioned that building this cost more than buying a pre-fab playhouse. Do you still know approximately what this cost you to build. We are trying to stay under $1,000 USD.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

  16. Looks awesome. Great job. Are the corner posts sunk into the ground at all....? If so, how far, and did you use concrete or anything to stabilize them?
